ENCORE

EVENT TECHNOLOGY

BACKGROUND

After putting a lot of thought into what vertical I would like to pursue for my third capstone I decided on Live Events and Event Management, specifically concerts and festivals. For the past 15 years I have worked in events and spent that time understanding what makes the experience so enjoyable to so many people. From seeing their favorite artist to taking in the atmosphere with friends. These moments often times create memories that last a lifetime.

What I find equally important is creating those memories safely. With that being said, I’ve designed Encore with safety in mind. Encore also serves alternative purposes to streamline the concert goers experience.

ENCORE PUTS SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND

  • Add friends and build your circle.

  • leave your cash at home. Encore wallet allows you to pay for food, drinks, and merch. Just scan your band.

  • Encore can detect your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and body temperature. You can also add two emergency contacts as well as your vaccination status. How cool is that?

  • View lineup and set times so that you don’t miss your favorite artists.

  • Encore lets you view shuttle schedules and gets you home safely.

THE PROBLEM

Let’s face it, accidents happen. After the tragedy at Astroworld in 2021, it became even more important to make the safety of attendees top priority. Heat exhaustion, overdoses, and crowd surges are just a few ways people can find themselves at harm when attending a concert or festival.

Encore is a wearable technology and app that is designed to keep attendees safe, while streamlining the event experience.

GOALS

After spending 12+ years working in the live event industry. I interviewed fellow colleges and concert go-ers to see what was important to them, and what can be improved.

My goal for this project was to design an app that allowed attendees to feel safe, connected, and informed. I focused on five major topics:

Health
Transactions
Transportation
Networking
Information

PERSONA

Brayden Maynard

AGE 26
OCCUPATION Retail Store Manager
GENDER Male
INCOME $60k
LOCATION Santa Cruz, CA

ABOUT

Brayden has worked his way up the retail ladder from stocking shelves to the store manager at Patagonia. Brayden understands the importance of work-life balance and makes time for friends, family, and looking for love.
In his free time, Brayden goes to concerts and music festivals, sporting events, and golfing.

NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • A stylish wristband that is sleek can be saved as a souvenir

  • App with easy to use interface taking the guesswork out

  • Spend less time pulling out wallet for purchases

  • Ability to feel safe and secure when attending concert

FRUSTRATIONS

  • Carrying cash

  • Apps that are slow and don’t allow Face I.D.

  • Missing a band perform at at festival

SITE MAP

There are two parts to Encore, hardware and software. With that being said, I wanted to outline the interface when using the watch as this plays a critical piece when using the app. The two work in tandem.

Encore app is the destination for all things concert/festival. From safety to shuttles.

UI KIT

LOGO DESIGN

Less tech, more direct. After designing a few different logos, I landed on one that I felt could resonate with all age groups.

TASK FLOW

I went into the task flowing knowing that half of users would activate and set up their profiles once they received their wristbands in the mail leading up to the event, while others would do so driving to the concert. Knowing that, I wanted to make it simple and intuitive. Once a your band is activated, simply create your profile and add funds to your wallet. Everything else from that point will useful when wearing the device, such as checking your health levels and locating friends.

LOW FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

When designing Encore, it was extremely important for me to design for the audience. What thing I noticed when iterating the designs was the need for it to speak to all types of people. I wanted users to feel like the app was cool yet informative. The main driver for Encore is event safety, but it is also important for me that users can leverage the app for so much more, such as buying merch, viewing set times, as well as finding friends and shuttles.

HIGH FIDELITY DESIGNS

After a lot of research and feedback, I landed on a final design that I felt spoke to user, and was not unique to any one particular concert or festival. I made it a point to design Encore in a why where it was its own entity, and not a temporary app released by the festival promotors.

Since all users would be experiencing Encore on their mobile devices, I took this into consideration by not overwhelming the design or user.

A lot of lessons learned on this one, but I am proud of what this design has become. Most importantly, what Encore stands for.

WHAT I LEARNED

Having spent most of my career working in live events, this assignment meant so much to me. My goal in its inception was to bring additional safety precautions to concerts and festivals. After extensive interviewing, I understood my audience. Creating an app that was both safety focused as well as streamlined the event experience was important.

Wallet feature, lineup at a glance, shuttle schedules were just a few additions that made this app come to life and provided the user with information they needed. With the help of the users, “Friends” will bring people together and stay connected. It will be a perpetual community that is not specific to any one particular concert or festival, but will have the ability to be leveraged across all events.

After all, the show must go on..
